After first seeing the Marfa Ghost Lights, YACHT changed course. Jona Bechtolt and Claire Evans of YACHT explain how paranormal sightings in Texas influenced their latest album during a pre-show discussion inside a bathroom on the second floor Toronto’s Wrong Bar. Their latest album, See Mystery Lights is largely indebted to the inherent mystery and folklore surrounding the mysterious ghost lights of Marfa, Texas. It was this experience that inspired YACHT to delve deep into the paranormal and eventually discover empowerment within the unknown elements of existence. As native children of the digital age, YACHT now incorporates mystery, spirituality and transcendence within their own information motivated ethos. The YACHT experience encompasses not just their music, but everything YACHT and their fans and well, people in general may do while seeking transcendence in day to day living – this includes everything from esoteric symbolism to websites and of course manic performances showcasing synthesizer blasts and audience question and answer periods. YACHT the band, business and belief system is not limited to its physical members but stands as a reference to the experience of a collective audience or an individual seeking to incorporate spiritual empowerment through the unknown elements of existence within the context of a modern, information saturated digital age.
